Molecular signatures of neurodegeneration in the cortex of PS1/PS2 double knockout mice

Background:
Familial Alzheimer’s disease-linked variants of presenilin (PSEN1 and PSEN2) contribute to the pathophysiology of disease by both gain-of-function and loss-of-function mechanisms. Deletions of PSEN1 and PSEN2 in the mouse forebrain result in a strong and progressive neurodegenerative phenotype which is characterized by both anatomical and behavioral changes.
Results:
To better understand the molecular changes associated with [...]

Surviving a franchise Hell

Navigating a personal crisis of any origin is a trick. Some people have told me that a franchise failure is like having 3 divorces at once.
From my experience, they underestimate the personal trauma that can occur.
I offered these ideas over at Blue MauMau today.
They were of use to me.
Everyone does these steps. You do the [...]

Humanity Before Diversity

One issue that should rise to the top of the corporate agenda in 2008 is diversity — or, more specifically, how managers and leaders deal with it. Diversity has been on the agenda for decades — differences of class, gender, ethnicity, faith, culture, education and sexual orientation are well understood — but diversity has taken [...]

Could Twitter Threaten Free Speech?

My friend Julia Kirby at Harvard Business Review alerted me to the kerfluffle at South-by-Southwest in Austin involving an interview with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Apparently the crowd didn’t like the interview that BusinessWeek writer Sarah Lacy was conducting, so they: a) started Twittering about it; and b) realizing that their individual objections were held [...]

On Young Bosses and Older Direct Reports

One of my early mentors used the word “approbation” frequently. I don’t hear it much these days, but he spoke often of having “approbation” for colleagues, particularly young people whom he “had time for,” whose views he valued enough to consider thoughtfully. The dictionary defines “approbation” as “an expression of warm approval” and [...]

Holding Out for the Ideal Job

I had just finished making a speech about choice – about the importance of finding work that you can feel excited about – when one of the audience members shared this story.
Her soon-to-be college graduate son is in the job market. With a background in accounting, he is finding the job market pretty attractive [...]

Everybody is talking about | Fashion phones

Something is in the air. Earlier this week, we received a mysterious package in the post from Nokia. Inside, we found a 7900 Crystal Prism phone, complete with a Sapphire crystal and engraved design by French graphic designer Frederique Daubal, who has previously collaborated with Paul Smith and Colette, the iconic Paris fashion concept boutique. [...]

Analysis of Aspergillus nidulans metabolism at the genome-scale

Background:
Aspergillus nidulans is a member of a diverse group of filamentous fungi, sharing many of the properties of its close relatives with significance in the fields of medicine, agriculture and industry. Furthermore, A. nidulans has been a classical model organism for studies of cell biology and gene regulation, and thus it has become one of [...]

Structure and expression pattern of Oct4 gene are conserved in vole Microtus rossiaemeridionalis

Background:
Oct4 is a POU-domain transcriptional factor which is essential for maintaining pluripotency in several mammalian species. The mouse, human, and bovine Oct4 orthologs display a high conservation of nucleotide sequence and genomic organization.
Results:
Here we report an isolation of a common vole (Microtus rossiaemeridionalis) Oct4 ortholog. Organization and exon-intron structure of vole Oct4 gene are similar [...]
