The Inklings: A Brotherhood of encouragement

The Inklings was an informal literary discussion group associated with the University of Oxford, England, for nearly two decades between the early 1930s and late 1949.
Two of its most famous members were C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.
Readings and discussions of the members’ unfinished works were the principal purposes of meetings. Tolkien’s The Lord of the [...]

HELP! I’m being repressed!

Authority within societies has been justified in several ways over the years.
To assume that market forces support democracy or is neutral to it, is a very false notion. Historically, corporate interests do very well under totalitarian regimes, such as fascism or absolute monarchies. During WWII, companies such as IBM, Daimler Benz, Bayer and Fiat prospered.
The [...]

Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in 3 generations

Some business sayings contain more than a kernel of truth.
Family wealth is seldom permanent. It moves over time. There are many reasons for that change in fortune; They can be accidental or intentional.
1. My wife’s family started and owned the London-Petrolia Barrel Company during the middle of the 19th and early 20th century. They were [...]

Bernanke Learns Lessons From Great Depression

Over at the Economist, a blog item flags the eerie parallels between the current crisis and the one they described on November 23, 1929, excerpted below:
“A prolonged upward movement…has been built up over a series of years on the amazing and unexampled prosperity of America. But some two years ago the speculative movement seemed [...]

lebensunwertes Leben: A Life Unworthy of Life

Medical doctors understand the way a human body functions. The Hippocratic Oath compels them to “do no harm” to their patient.
A white lab coat is worn by someone who would help you: Would heal you.
It was always a doctor who did the selection once the train arrived ["left" or "right"]. Kanada 1 and 2 were [...]

Repetition does not transform a lie into the truth.

In a previous post entitled United Kingdom franchise media: What soap?, I took exception with an article that appeared in the Eastern Daily Press called Flourishing franchises buck trend.
It riled me so much that I fired off an email questioning the credibility of the sources (franchise banker, British Franchise Association, consultant/salesman, etc.).
Perpetuating the falsehood (franchises [...]

Les Stewart: Air Force brat

I was born in 1959 on a Royal Canadian Air Force station, CFB Sennetiere, Quebec where my dad was stationed. He was a Chief Warrant Officer and made 22 Atlantic ocean crossings during WWII. They gave him an Atlantic Star.
I guess it is unusual for a non-commissioned air force officer to be given a navy [...]

Susan Kezios: one tough cookie

I had the great fortune of meeting Susan Kezios, the president of the American Franchisee Association in 2000.
She was brought to Toronto from their Chicago, U.S. offices to give expert witness testimony to the Ontario legislature Standing Committee on Regulation and Private Bills on March 6, 2000.

Here is the link to her testimony.

As you can [...]

A Rare and useful Gripe Site model

Anthony’s Franchise Information is a very instructive website for several reasons.
1. It shows how frequently a franchisor will start with one system (3 for 1 Pizza and Wings) and then branch out to other ones (Pizza One, Anthony’s Pizza Uno and Anthony’s Kitchen) once things become a little too “complicated”.
Changing countries and having your mother [...]
