Should we perform systematic electrophysiological study in myotonic dystrophy type 1?

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (Steinert’s disease) is a multisystem disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance.
This disease is associated with the presence of an abnormal expansion of a cytosine thymine-guanine (CTG) trinucleotide repeat on chromosome 19q13.3. Because of rhythmic complications, the place for systematic electrophysiological study (EPS) has to be discussed.

Low-density lipoprotein concentration in the normal left coronary artery tree

Background:
The blood flow and transportation of molecules in the cardiovascular system plays a crucial role in the genesis and progression of atherosclerosis. This computational study elucidates the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) site concentration in the entire normal human 3D tree of the LCA.
Methods:
A 3D geometry model of the normal human LCA tree is constructed. Angiographic [...]

Anti-angiogenesis therapy based on the bone marrow-derived stromal cells genetically engineered to express sFlt-1 in mouse tumor model

Background:
Bone marrow-derived stromal cells (BMSCs) are important for development, tissue cell replenishment, and wound healing in physiological and pathological conditions. BMSCs were found to preferably reach sites undergoing the process of cell proliferation, such as wound and tumor, suggesting that BMSCs may be used as a vehicle for gene therapy of tumor.
Methods:
Mouse BMSCs were loaded [...]

2008 Nobel prize in Medicine for discoverers of HIV

Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier, codiscoverers of HIV, the causative agent of AIDS, have been awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. They share this prize with Harald zur Hausen who was responsible for establishing the link between human papilloma virus infection and cervical carcinoma.

Improved survival in both men and women with diabetes between 1980 and 2004 - a cohort study in Sweden.

Background:
In Sweden, diabetes prevalence is increasing in spite of unchanged incidence, indicating improved survival. In recent US studies mortality in diabetic subjects has decreased over three decades, but only in men. Our aim was to study mortality over time in diabetic subjects.
Methods:
The annual Swedish Living Conditions Survey from 1980 to 2004 has been record-linked to [...]

Lack of association between right-to-left shunt and cerebral ischemia after adjustment for gender and age

Introduction
A number of studies has addressed the possible association between patent foramen ovale (PFO) and stroke. However, the role of PFO in the pathogenesis of cerebral ischemia has remained controversial and most studies did not analyze patient subgroups stratified for gender, age and origin of stroke.
Methods
To address the role of PFO for [...]

Health-related quality of life after myocardial infarction is associated with level of left ventricular ejection fraction

Background:
The objective was to explore the relationship between left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) assessed during hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction (MI) and later health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
Methods:
We used multivariable linear regression to assess the relationship between LVEF and HRQoL in 256 MI patients who responded to the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ), the EQ-5D [...]

Hyperkalaemic paralysis presenting as ST-elevation myocardial infraction: a case report

Background:
Hyperkalaemic paralysis due to renal failure is a rare but potentially life threatening event. Case presentationWe present a 61 yr old Caucasian male who had sudden onset ascending flaccid paralysis. The EMS first diagnosis was acute ST- elevation myocardial infarction based on an EKG. In the emergency room (ER) due to careful history taking, serum [...]
